Angel, my Angel!
Heavenly angels are generally portrayed as being human in bodily form, with wings attached somewhere on the upper back. Since this gives them 3 sets of appendages, they are unlike any known mammal, bird or reptile, all of which have only 2 pairs of limbs, so perhaps they are a species of insect.
Then there is the problem of flight. If they were ethereal, weighing essentially nothing, it would seem that no wings are required, as they could just float about. However, apparently they can interact physically with humans, so they must have solid bodies similar to ours. Remember the angel Gabriel blows a trumpet, so he must have a solid body. Obviously, this gives them considerable weight, so the wings depicted in the majority of paintings of angels would be too flimsy and small. And, of course, to fly they would need powerful chest and shoulder muscles to be able to lift their bodies against the force of gravity. However, you won’t find such musculature in the paintings.
Another difficulty is that these winged creatures, who presumably need air to fly in, supposedly travel back and forth to Heaven, wherever it is. Unless Heaven is in a different spacial dimension than our universe, it must be well beyond our solar system, since we would certainly have discovered an object as large as it must be to contain all the good Christians who have gone there. So how can these beings travel vast distances through airless space?
Could it possibly be that angels do not really exist after all?
